Rick Anderson was honored with the Lifetime Bedding Achievement Award.
There was a common theme in the acceptance speeches that our award winners delivered during the Furniture Today Bedding Conference. “We will get through this time together,” the winners said, in so many words.
During the awards gala, sponsored by Serta, we honored three Retail Giants of Bedding: Greg and Katy Law of Sweet Dreams Mattress & Furniture, John Merwin of Brooklyn Bedding and Mattress Firm franchisee Harry Roberts. We also recognized long-time Tempur Sealy International executive Rick Anderson with our Lifetime Bedding Achievement Award.
Our goal was to honor those industry leaders, saluting the Laws’ commitment to their Dream Team of employees, Merwin’s omnichannel strengths, Roberts’ can-do spirit and Anderson’s steady leadership. But our honorees showed their character by offering encouragement to an industry that continues to move through this COVID-19 climate.
The Laws talked about the power of their people. “We are not in the mattress business,” Greg said. “We are in the people business, finding and recruiting and hiring the right people with kind hearts who share our core values so that together we can make a real difference in the lives of our customers and the communities we serve.”
“It is vital that we all learn from each other and support each other in this time,” Merwin said. “I can’t tell you how much I love this industry and love what I’m doing.”
“No matter what happens in this crazy world, people will always sleep,” Roberts said. “If we focus on our front door, love our people and make sure they are happy, and create a world class customer experience every time they walk in our store, we will not only survive, but we will thrive in this fantastic industry.”
In his acceptance speech, Anderson looked back to the early days of Tempur-Pedic, recalling the passionate, scrappy and hardworking team that built a bedding powerhouse. He identified several lessons from the growth of Tempur-Pedic and Tempur Sealy International that can be applied today, among them: “Do the right thing, even if it hurts,” and “Think big, knowing that today’s situation won’t last forever.”
Those acceptance speeches were moving, and they provided a wonderful reminder that the spirit and character of the men and women in the mattress industry can conquer any challenge.
