HOLLAND, Mich. – Consumer product testing resource Underwriters Laboratories has expanded its testing capabilities for a range of juvenile products including cribs, high chairs and changing tables at its laboratory and testing facilities here.
UL said that it now offers juvenile furniture manufacturers access to comprehensive testing, assessment, certification and advisory services to help ensure their products “meet or exceed rigorous health and safety standards and help protect the environment.
These include safety testing for potential hazards such as tip-over through the UL Product Stability Verified program, pinch and entrapment risks, flammability testing and UL Greenguard Certification for products with low emissions of volatile organic compounds.
“UL is committed to helping manufacturers bring safer, healthier products for children to market,” said Alberto Uggetti, vice president and general manager of UL’s Environment and Sustainability division. “Equipped with staff and facilities dedicated to juvenile products, our Holland, Mich., laboratory is a single resource offering manufacturers convenience and cost effectiveness when conducting comprehensive health, safety and sustainability testing.”

I’m Tom Russell and have worked at Furniture/Today since August 2003. Since then, I have covered the international side of the business from a logistics and sourcing standpoint. Since then, I also have visited several furniture trade shows and manufacturing plants in Asia, which has helped me gain perspective about the industry in that part of the world. As I continue covering the import side of the business, I look forward to building on that knowledge base through conversations with industry officials and future overseas plant tours. From time to time, I will file news and other industry perspectives online and, as always, welcome your response to these Web postings.
