LIVERMORE, Calif. – RTA furniture specialist Z-Line Designs has filed for voluntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.
In its Nov. 5 filing, the company listed between $100,000 and $500,000 in estimated assets and between $1 million and $10 million in estimated liabilities.
It listed more than 80 creditors on a list that included Staples Canada, FedEx, 220 Elm and Li & Feng International Holdings and Bureau Veritas. The list also included a number of mostly Asian source factories.
The company was founded in 1995 by Jim Sexton, president and CEO, who was not immediately available for comment.
Today it remains a major resource for home office furniture including desks, bookcase units file storage and seating. It also produces home entertainment units and fireplace consoles.
The line features largely contemporary designs featuring mostly smaller scale desks with clear and smoked tempered glass top work surfaces and wood and metal bases. While many of the pieces are smaller in scale they offer ample storage space in the form of pull out keyboard trays and shelves.
Over the years, the line has been sold at many online and brick and mortar retailers across the country including Wal-Mart, Conn’s, Costco, BestBuy, Target, Amazon, Overstock, Wayfair as well as office superstores such as Office Depot and Staples.
I’m Tom Russell and have worked at Furniture/Today since August 2003. Since then, I have covered the international side of the business from a logistics and sourcing standpoint. Since then, I also have visited several furniture trade shows and manufacturing plants in Asia, which has helped me gain perspective about the industry in that part of the world. As I continue covering the import side of the business, I look forward to building on that knowledge base through conversations with industry officials and future overseas plant tours. From time to time, I will file news and other industry perspectives online and, as always, welcome your response to these Web postings.
